Chimeric Rhesus Monkeys Have Been Born, And They’re Super Cute!
Take a good look folks, those adorable little rhesus monkeys are the future of medical science; a bright future, and aparently, an extremely cute future. Recently born in Oregon (United States), Hex, Roku, and Chimero are the world’s first ever chimeric primates; containing the DNA of not just two, but of mutiple parents. Scientists used the stem cells of multiple adult rhesus monkeys to create an embryo containing the genes of six different parents, then implanted that embryo into a momma-monkey, who then gave natural birth to these three little ones. Scientists have been able to create chimeric creatures before, but never a species as complicated as monkeys, and they believe that this adorable success can lead to major improvements in the understanding of stem cells and their regenerative qualities. Stem cell therapy is believed by some to be the end-all cure for afflictions like Parkinson’s Disease and paralysis; so the birth of these three monkeys could someday lead to millions of people leading better lives; it really makes us want to hug them even more!
