Dogs With Jobs: Seeing Eye Puppies
Our expose` on K9 unit police puppies was a hit so here is more about the other side of the intense training little puppies go through. While many seeing eye dogs are some breed of Labrador Retriever (as pictured above – a golden lab puppy!) many of the K9 unit police dogs who aren’t aggressive enough to pass police exams are either adopted, or if they show great potential in training, are sent over to seeing eye facilities, where they receive additional training in assisting the blind.
Seeing eye dogs provide a valuable service to the elderly, enfeebled and handicapped, allowing people with limited or no eye sight to navigate the world and safely walk the streets. A trained seeing eye companion is more than just a pet, he or she is a companion and a totally adorable friend that is there at the side of his or her owner all day long.
We know you must have seen some seeing eye dogs in the past – but did you know that a lot of labrador puppies are sent to families as young as their first year to grow up with the family of the person who they will be assisting? Know what that means? Cute seeing eye dog puppies!
