Cute Baby Camels: A Desert Delight!
Camels! These famous desert beasts of burden are common throughout North Africa and the Middle East, as well as parts of western Australia. I’ll bet you didn’t know that some similar species such as the llama, alpaca and guanaco are all included under the umbrella term “Camel” which comes from their family name, not species name. Camels actually used to roam the plains of North America before they were all wiped out by human expansion more than 10,000 years ago. Can you picture seeing these cute baby animals wobbling around your neighborhood? Hard to imagine!
How long before these adorable camel babies are ready to saddle up and carry supplies through the sandy dunes to the next oasis? The newborns may stay with their mothers from one to two years.
To this day, camels remain an essential part of life for many peoples throughout North Africa and the middle east, their milk is considered to be a “whole food” that can sustain life on its own.
