Spotlight On: Baby Flamingos!

Hello Zoo fans! With Memorial Day in the rear view mirror, us Zookeepers are gearing up for the summer months; and what better way to ring in the hot weather with some totally cool birds? Flamingos – aside from being one of the most striking and funny birds in the whole animal kingdom also have some of the cutest, fuzziest baby chicks!

You might be wondering why these adorable baby flamingos are white instead of pink like their parents. It’s because flamingos are super picky eaters, and live on a diet that consists of mostly one item: yummy pink shrimp! These fabulous flamingos eat so much of the stuff that they literally turn pink! See here for more examples of the cool transition these adorable baby birds make from fuzzy and white to sleek and pink. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to have some fake flamingos on your front lawn? We think so.
