Baby Sea Turtles: The Journey of a Lifetime
Baby sea turtles, once hatched on the beach, embark on a journey which is unlike anything else in the animal kingdom. These amazing marine reptiles are not only some of the cutest baby animals in the ocean and on the beach but also are some of the most interesting animals in the world. Though typically these beautiful sea creatures have an estimated life span of 80 years, conflicting reports and records put the oldest ever recorded lifespan of a loggerhead sea turtle at upwards of 300 years! This phenomenon is known as “negligible senescence” – a term that scientists use to describe animals who do not appear to experience cell degradation and destruction with age. These ageless animals are being studied the world over for potential medical breakthroughs in dealing with human aging and a variety of diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
Though their lifespans are long, many of the newly hatched baby sea turtles never make it to their watery home, as the beach is a dangerous place for a tiny turtle. If you want to know more about these amazing turtles, we recommend this film.
