Bunny Rabbits: One of Nature’s Cutest and Cuddliest
No list of cute baby animals can ever be complete without mentioning baby bunny rabbits, a species so adorable that they basically own their own holiday (Easter), and so friendly to humans, that they’ve become cultural icons (like Bugs Bunny, one of history’s great poets). Bunny rabbits can be found all over the world, with species existing in North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe, and are known for their “excessive” breeding habits; during a single season, a female rabbit can give birth to hundreds of babies, or kits. Kits are born naked (no fur), blind, and helpless, and are only suckled once or twice a day (this is because the mother’s milk is so high in nutritional value); they wean at about 5-6 weeks, and soon after become almost completely independent. Mother rabbits have a peculiar way of protecting their young; they abandon them. In an effort to keep from attracting predators, the mother will leave her litter in the nest (where they burrow to the bottom) and not come back until it’s time for their next feeding. This technique is actually very effective, except for the issue of people finding these nests, assuming the kits have been left to die, and taking them in; this often results in families being broken apart rather than saved.
