Chipmunks Are Always Cute
Known for their small size, and chubby-cheeked cuteness, chipmunks are a tiny member of the squirel family that never grow larger than 4 to 7 in (10 to 18 cm) in length and 1 to 5 ounces (28 to 142 grams) in weight. All in all, there are over 25 different species of chipmunk, and they all start out no bigger than the size of a few coins; born with their eyes still shut, their ears stuck to their heads, and skin so thin that you can see their organs. After only a few weeks, they become the little speedsters that we’re all used to seeing in cartoons, as their wide-eyed look and tiny features have made chipmunks a favorite subject for animators; placing them in cartoons like Chip and Dale, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Chipmunks are also known for their hoarding capabilities, but aren’t conventional hibernators; instead, chipmunks spend the cold winter snacking on the food that they stored during the summer.
