Dogs With Jobs: Doggie Showbiz!
I’m ready for my closeup! Show dogs are some of the hardest working and most interesting pooches in the world! What are show dogs, you ask? Well you must have seen dog competitions on ESPN2 or perhaps have heard of the Westminster Dog Competition? All of these and more are what most people think of as beauty contests for dogs, but in reality they go much deeper. With competitions for advanced training, obedience and more, dog shows aim to find “ideal” examples of a given breed. These are exclusively purebreds trained from the time they are tiny puppies, and bred to be a perfect example of their respective breeds. Body lengths should be exactly so long, weights, arrangement of teeth, heights, coloring and more all lead to a final judgement on the work the breeder has put in to his or her litter.
Even if you aren’t a dog trainer or owner yourself, you have to marvel at the parade and display of such a variety of showdogs. And the good thing about dogs is that no matter how famous they may be or how many awards they might have won, the don’t really care that much, it never goes to their heads.
