“Fly” High With Baby Squirrels
Peek-a-boo! We’re back with more cute baby squirrels, except these little sweet-faced rodents are extra special because they can fly! Well – not quite, in fact the only true flying mammal in the world is the bat, but flying squirrels have this amazing stretchy membrane that connects their limbs which stays retracted most of the time, but when making daring leaps between tree limbs way up high in the canopy of the forest, or even in your back yard, the flying squirrel extends their fleshy skin and glides long distances, just like flying.
When they are born they are pretty much hairless and they stay put in the nest for about five weeks or so while Mom takes care of things. After that, they are for the most part developed and ready to start investigating the world. And after only 2 to 3 months they have already learned how to “fly” or glide.
Even more amazing to us here at the Baby Animal Zoo is how cute and adorable they are when they are young! Like other rodents, some people are afraid of these cute little guys, but we dare you to take a look at these precious photos and not become a devout flying squirrel fan. How can anyone be afraid of something so cute? Do you think they might come try to swoop down and steal some peanuts out of your hands?
