Muskrats are a prolific rodent species that lives all over North America and Northern Eurasia. They need water to live, preferring to live in wetlands like swamps. Even though they share some similarities, and they have a name with “rats” in it, they aren’t classified in the same genus as traditional rats, and have more in common with other water dwelling rodents like beavers. Muskrats have lots and lots of cute babies, sometimes giving birth to 3 litters in a year, each one with up to 8 cute hairless muskrat babies! If you’re scared of these cute little guys, rest assured they won’t hurt you – 95% of their diet is vegetarian!
