Rusty-Red, Thick-Furred Panda
What a beautiful thick rusty red coat and and striped tail. Is it a red raccoon, dog, cat, fox or bear? No, it’s a panda, a lesser or red panda. But it is not that closely related to any of those other animals, even the big panda, it’s its own animal. Their coloration varies with lighter and dark shades of red on top, and the undersides sometimes a dark chocolate brown.
Red pandas are mostly nocturnal and if you let them be the will stay curled up in a tree, wrapped in their tails sleeping all day. Like the giant panda they will also eat bamboo shoots, as well as grass, roots, nuts, fruits, and sometimes a mouse, bird or bird eggs. It is fairly calm and quite unless provoked.
The mother gives birth to 1 or 2 young usually, but sometimes triplets or rarely 4. The young stay with mum for about a year.
