Look Who’s Hangin’ Around: Spider Monkey Babies!
Been missing primates recently? It’s been a while since we’ve had any animal photos of good ol’ monkeys, but it’s that time again! So if you’ve been waiting for us to follow up on one of our other great baby monkey articles, you’re in luck! This time we’ve got one of the funest monkeys around: the famous spider monkey!
Ever wonder why these cute primates are named after a scary arachnid? Look at their very long arms and legs, plus that long prehensile tail (that means they can use their tails to grab onto and hold things) – their long spidery limbs gave rise to their popular nickname. In reality, these are all monkeys in the genus Ateles – which is a group of New World Monkeys that live primarily in Central America and the northern forests of South America. Though during the dry season when food is scarce these monkeys can chomp on bark or insects, they get more than 9/10ths of their nutrition from the fruits and nuts common to their jungle homes. Think these are the most adorable monkeys you’ve seen yet?
